Blog posts on Growth and Inspiration:
If you, like me, are out there trying something new, here’s to the clumsy two steps forward, one step back. Here’s to overdoing it, tacking and course correcting, being clumsy, and overcorrecting to the other side.
TL;DR: We all struggle with self doubt, uncertainty, a hope for reassurance. Those questions have no answers and a million answers. 1. In times of doubt and confusion, find inspiration from the stories of your heroes and their struggles. 2. You don’t need to see the whole path, just the step in front of you. Take that one step. 3. Answer the why? Why would you do this hard thing?
TL;DR: Five Things I Hope We All Learn Before We Die: We cannot change anyone else. Get out of you own head to relieve your pain. Pay attention to what you loathe and run from. These things point you toward your heart, your purpose, and your mission. You are a perfect, whole, and treasured culmination of thousands of years of evolution and love. And so is every other freaking person in this world.
TL;DR summary: Only use tools that maximally determine your happiness and success. I actively don’t hustle IRL - why do I do it over social media? (reflection sharing etc.) Realization: My own hashtag hustle is rooted in not feeling good enough as is. End: What would you like to hear about that would add value to your life?
This week I’m going to review how one begins to build capacity for deep work and armor against distraction. Then I’ll share concrete examples of the changes I’m making in my own life to increase deep work and reduce distraction.
So how does deep work apply to my own small professional world, a world that may appear distant from the tech workers Newport references? What does it mean for me to be a valuable, productive psychologist or a valuable, productive author? Does it mean that I write often, that my social media alerts ping frequently with likes and coveted retweets? Even as I play it out you can feel the emptiness, can’t you? For me, being a productive and useful psychologist means being clinically precise and being able to show with data that after people work with me their lives are *better*, richer, and fuller of value.
Once a month, I offer an annotated list of articles, videos, and other inspiration that recently changed my life for the better. Here’s to spreading the love and curating the wealth of free knowledge on the internet.
I think the grandest and most destructive illusion is that everyone else is ok and we’re the only one that’s in pain. We’re all in pain; through genes and history and environment and dumb luck, we’re all doing the best we can and sometimes that feels so far from great.
This is a letter for you, the missed call, the person in the middle space. That space where it hurts almost enough to act…almost.
I don't say that you are tattooed on my heart but there you are. and years from now, know that I when I look up at a vast sky of stars, I silently wish you peace and love and all life has to offer.
